Welcome to Redesign Malaysia: For Better Broadband, For the Rakyat. - Internet, Broadband, Malaysia, WiFi, Wireless, WiMax, Streamyx, Jaring and more…

This website is an initiative to improve Malaysia’s broadband facilities. It contains a broadband coverage map, articles on Malaysia broadband, comparisions of internet service providers and feature articles.

Redesign Malaysia is an initiative to improve Malaysia's broadband internet penetration, quality and reliability. We aim to achieve this through the compilation of relevant news articles, allowing users to have a voice, enlightening consumers on the options that are available, providing comparative statistics on ISPs, as well as the production of special features and commentary.

It is designed to be a community effort, to utilize information and feedback from broadband users and potential customers across Malaysia. We also aim to gain cooperation from the various broadband players in Malaysia, as well as support from government agencies and regulators.

Currently, we are focused on the Klang Valley, however in time we aim to expand this initiative nationwide. Let's all collaborate - to make fast, cheap and efficient broadband available throughout Malaysia.

Hi, It’s a noble cause you’re doing working on here, as many of us are paying through our nose for a broadband the speed of a dialup. Not to mention the disconnections, like what i’m having right this moment (I’ll have to wait aabout 5mins to submit this, or it’ll be lost).

a suggestion, could you use a javascript/DOM onclick=”select()” function on the textareas in the Spread The Word page? so that user could just click on the textarea and the whole code will be selected. less scrolling, less tedious, and easier to spread the word. you want to give the users ease-of-use, right?

another thing, please enlighten me on how exactly do you plan to increase our broadband quality? is it on a mere “large support” or a petition kind of support, or is there any direct methods that redesignMalaysia is able to do?

I had been living in Garden Park Condo in Bandar Sg Long for more then 4 years but still not having any internet service nor telephone service. I am looking for wireless broadbank service now but it seem Bandar Sg Long is out cover by all the Wireless Broadband provider. I really hope to have wireless coverage in future.

Don’t even start on the customer service.I am still waitting for a rebate from TMNET for the last 3 months. They had ealier activated my account without informing me and only when i received the bill that I noticed that it had been activated(I haven’t even received the modem yet at the time).Sent email to their custcare and got a reply two weeks later.Sent a second email and got a reply a month later.Had since faxed the detailed form(with date of receiving the modem) but still no reply yet and its been almost a month.Amazingly my service got disconnected instantly when i kinda delayed paying the bills (about a week late).TMNET just taking us for a ride coz they know we need them epecially here in Johor where there is lacking of other service provider.I would jump boat if there is any.I wonder how they even got awarded for best Broadband provider.

My download speed went from ok, to bad… and now I’m downloading at a pathetic 4kbps here at my house in Sunway using Streamyx. I feel cheated. nuf said. I think the people in charge should stop those promising interviews with the press and actually DO it, be leaders and not followers. Malaysia is starting to look like Indonesia when it comes to corruption, and China when it comes to “Copycating”. mind you I’m not part of the general public who sits, complains and do nothing, if only you knew :) . peace.

ADSL speed is heavily dependent on the distance between your location and the nearest Exchange. For more info, pls visit
For those who live in areas where phone lines don’t even exist, perhaps you can try 3G Internet (Maxis or Celcom) with a 3G phone, or EDGE (Maxis/Celcom/Digi). 3G is capable of up to 384/128Kbps. I’ve been using Maxis 3G in JB since January and it’s reasonably good. Customer service is hopeless though!! And bear in mind it’s SHARED, so if many users near you are surfing you may get 64Kbps :(
I received a mailer which seems interesting - broadband via RF (Radio Frequency). Visit
For those who wants real high speed and mobility like I do, start saving $ for Nokia N95 or Samsung z720. These models are HSPDA and you will surf at 1.8Mbps theoretically!! Just hope they won’t raise the charges… :)

Full marks to the Redesign Malaysia initiative. I work from home and travel a lot in the region including Singapore and Hong Kong where the response times are first class. Streamyx falls far short of a broadband service, often no better than dial up. The Streamyx speedometer test is a complete waste of time and does not represent the true situation. It merely tests the connection between the user and the Streamyx server(s) and always shows the speed to be good but does not represent the true situation when surfing especially with sites located outside Malaysia. The download speed is pathetic to say the least for so called broadband. In order to get more subscribers a significant investment needs to be made in fibre optic cabling rather than the antiquated copper wire that is currently in use and of course the cost needs to be reduced. It is quite scandalous that users should be paying the current monthly subscriptions for a service that is not much better than dial up.
Come on Streamyx wake up and please tell your support guys to stop wasting peoples time to do this and that to resolve slow speed when they know that it will make no difference because of the lousy infrastructure.

Maxis Wireless Broadband . Okie i have recently gotten the following service from maxis. It come with modem+ package you choose (384/768). Tried on few area like OUG old klang road, Puchong, and Cyberjaya. OUG is having out coverage situation which using on EDGE however its stable but slowwwwwwwwwwwww. Puchong is currently a big let down…let me on the caps … LET DOWN!!!. Its connected on 3G in UTMS mode but most of the time disconnect and reconnect 1 hour about 5-6 times. Cyberjaya is cool using its in HSDPA mode which is fast and stable. HOwever who is going to surf here if most of the users in KL huh??? So i hope Maxis will really do something about their connection problems.

I went to Korea in November 2006 for a Meeting and as a usual practitioner of good computing, I brought along my trusty laptop. I was shocked that when I tried to access the WiBro (Wireless Broadband) there is like 20 ISPs ready to give full 20.0MB connection. Hmm… I don’t believe we got something like this in Malaysia. Nonetheless, Malaysia’s broadband service really, awfully sucks!

TMNUT customers service really…. (can’t find the appropriate word)
I emailed them concerning my problem but they cut and paste a regular reply mail.
I replied stressing my problem again and again I receive the cut and paste reply.
I replied AGAIN, scolding them of their incompetency and AGAIN i receive that same cut and paste reply
Conclusion: I found that the customer service officers in TMNUT does not understand English.

Josh, thumbs up for you to come up with this website, but sad to say, I don’t really think this will change things. Competition nurtures competency, and sad to say - there’s only one company monopolizing and will continue to be only one. The only way to get better broadband I’m afraid so we have to migrate elsewhere.

If other country can have their own Telecom User Group, like the ATUG (Australia Telecommunications Users Group) http://www.atug.com.au/ We MALAYSIAN should start one or rather make the current organisation (if we have one) today more powerful and more vocals to speak about our consumer rights to the Goverment.

I’ve got my first 3G phone about few weeks ago (motorola RAZR V3x and I immediateley subscribed to Celcom Postpaid Plan (C250) plus Unlimited data plan, which cost me RM150/month. In their promotional website they say the 3G internet connection can goes up to 384K, but what I’ve got most of the time is 48-56k tops, and I’m feel cheated. For your information I’m living in Segamat with full 3G coverage, and I connect to the internet using laptop with my phone acts as a modem via bluetooth. They don’t even explain how the 3G internet connection really works. They should do sometimes about this.

I think we have enough complain, it seem demand/supply don’t work quite well in Malaysia. The market is not efficient here, we have demand but nobody is seriously doing something about the supply. Well, lucky sometime I still get get connected in Starbuck.

Hi, I live in Jalan Kebun near Kota Kemuning Shah Alam… I subscribed to Streamyx 1Mbps @ RM99… download speed 1.5Mbps using http (not peer2peer torrent)… So I’m one of Streamyx happy customer… as for those who used peer2peer, you also have to at peer2peer server connection speed… the problem may happened in the peer2peer server, not the ISPs…

I stay at Sg Buloh. The home fix line is provided by Maxis. But the area is not covered by Maxis wired and wireless broadband. TMNet rejected my application of Streamyx. I need broadband access to update my webpage. So my solution is to apply for Airzed( less than RM130 for one year ). The only problem is to get their hotspot. Recently I found the best hotspot, Cineleisure PIN Junction. Car parking RM1, one hot Milo RM1.50( free usage of power ) and I may get the speed of more than 48Mbps. I believe this cost is the cheapest compare with others.

August 26 2006 || 1:28 pm
Fong Sau Weng said..comment

. . . continues. Internet access used at PIN Junction is not Airzed. It is their own access. It means that, after using Arized of one year, I am going to let Airzed service terminated, just go to PIN Junction. So the cost is only RM2.50 for one night long. If I go to StarBuck or Dome, the cost could be up to more than RM20.

The problem with 3G is the spectrum of 5MHz pair is coshare with voice. If the voice of your area shot up, the data rate drop, of course data is not-real time but the data rate drops and average out and HSDPA is ridding on the same spectrum for voice, videocall, 384kbps and HSDPA 64QAM service, so it’s depends on your luck whether you are under a voice hotspot plus data hotspot.Backhaul link from access node also a problem with the celaka planning people, they have to increase bandwidth, expect multiple access node to ride on the same backhaul; habis lah like that. Go and download netpersec to see what is your dataspeed at your ethernet port or PPP. Some application add alot of overhead and that reduce your payload, and also the host that stream data to you.

at the end of the day; what is still the best beat on having higher data rate? get the service where they have less subscriber loh, maybe like U-mobile ke? better is to get free trial in your area loh… but no provide give this. So we should lobby Dato’ Lim Kiang yaik to implement this lah

People had been fustrated on Malaysia’s service provider..
and i am surely know that the service provider such as TMnet has the reason to have such quality for the service..

it’s not just us that would say how poor quality Malaysia’s service provider has been given to us..

the problems we had are mostly because of how slow we are having now..
and the price has gradually rise if we need a better service..

it’s the technology era that internet has been implemented for every countries and even our country

Could we at least have a better connection service with a reasonable prices?

at least, just for our poor people that couldn’t afford the internet :

TM NET STREAMYX IS NUTS ! This freakin’ screamyx so-call ‘broadband’ is a total scam. 512kbpbs package providing average download speed of 5kpbs. 0.97656% efficiency. How good is that. TM Net should just close down, & go to hell. Burn in hell as well for scamming the rakyats. Those minister should just really go die. Useless peoples. Porks.

This Complaint is for Celcom Broadband. I’ve been throttled or cap to dial up after my 5GB bandwidth has been used ! it was 5 KB or 4 KB !!!!! that’s nut ! Celcom please make it Truthly Unlimited Broadband Plan !!! PLEASE CHANGE YOUR PLAN LIKE STREAMYX !! FOR EVERYBODY OUT THERE.. IF YOU’RE SEARCHING FOR MOBILE BROADBAND THAT TRUTHLY UNLIMITED, PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM CELCOM BB OR CELCOM BROADBAND !!! (DON’T CHOOSE CELCOM BROADBAND !) I THINK STREAMYX IS BETTER UNLIMITED AND REASONABLE PRICE FOR TRUTHLY UNLIMITED.
