Overall broadband Internet penetration is between 6% and 7% currently from 4% earlier in the year, said TM Net Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Michael Lai.
“They see the pennies instead of the pounds, losing sight of the ‘pot of gold’ in the distance. They are interested only in making profits and protecting their investments, putting the future of the whole industry in jeopardy,” he said.
“We are confident of the 9MP’s initiatives to bridge the digital divide. However, equipping the nation with PCs is only the first step because it is more important for the people to be empowered,” he said.
Lee said he believes consumers would migrate to 3G naturally as the industry matures. However, he said, telecommunications companies would have to play an essential role to increase the adoption rate.
“From my observation, most advertisements about 3G are focused on the features and fees structure of the service. But these advertisements don’t focus on educating the public on the benefits consumers can gain from using 3G services,”

“In supporting Malaysia to achieve the target set in the National Broadband Plan, TM will expedite the rollout of broadband using both fixed and wireless access to reach more than 500,000 customers by the end of 2005,” he added.
“Abdul Wahid said TM was currently utilising only 50% of its entire network and was talking with Internet service providers to have access to wholesale unbundling of local loop on a bit-stream basis,”
TM Net Sdn Bhd expects to double its number of broadband subscribers to 540,000 by year end from the current 270,000, Telekom Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Wahid Omar says.
