Welcome to Redesign Malaysia: For Better Broadband, For the Rakyat. - Internet, Broadband, Malaysia, WiFi, Wireless, WiMax, Streamyx, Jaring and more…

This website is an initiative to improve Malaysia’s broadband facilities. It contains a broadband coverage map, articles on Malaysia broadband, comparisions of internet service providers and feature articles.

Redesign Malaysia is an initiative to improve Malaysia's broadband internet penetration, quality and reliability. We aim to achieve this through the compilation of relevant news articles, allowing users to have a voice, enlightening consumers on the options that are available, providing comparative statistics on ISPs, as well as the production of special features and commentary.

It is designed to be a community effort, to utilize information and feedback from broadband users and potential customers across Malaysia. We also aim to gain cooperation from the various broadband players in Malaysia, as well as support from government agencies and regulators.

Currently, we are focused on the Klang Valley, however in time we aim to expand this initiative nationwide. Let's all collaborate - to make fast, cheap and efficient broadband available throughout Malaysia.

According to this article: “Wimax.com - Malaysia to award 2.3GHz licenses next month”, the delay of awarding the licenses since September 2006 is expected drawing to a close soon. Interesting things noted are that the operator “offering the highest speed at the lowest price” and with a “substantial amount of resources required for a nation wide rollout” will be the one most likely to win, according Malaysian Energy, Water & Communications Minister, Dato Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik. Bidders include Redtone, DiGi and Maxis. Although not noted in the article, Green Packet might be one of the bidders. Another article titled “Foreign firms to build WiMax system in Malaysia” , says that foreign firms Alcatel, Lucent, Redline Communications and local firm Nasioncom are also bidding.

Update: Maxis & Motorola have been testing 4 live trial WiMax sites. They have announced a successful call from the KLCC trial site, and testing for the other trial sites is planned to be completed in the second quarter of 2007.
My personal plea (that I’m sure a lot of you agree with too): Please, Dato Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, let the winner be the ISP that we have all been waiting for.

Do note the first operator that comes to mind when the following is mentioned in the above article.

“offering the highest speed at the lowest price” and with a “substantial amount of resources required for a nation wide rollout”

That’s it, we’re screwed! ROFL!

Anyway, its one thing to have wimax, but the lack of local content is still quite apparent (for me at least). Our current local content seems to be geared for entertainment only, which is sad for people like me who considers the pursuit of knowledge (and money :P ) to be of priority than who’s the next nobody that wins AF on Astro.

Andy - true, but a lot of people care about Mawi than Mathematics. :) A certain minister is fond of quoting that in South Korea, broadband took off because of the 3 “G’s” - Girls, Gaming and Gambling…as its the majority that will determine a push for broadband penetration. Have you seen any good local broadband content around (entertainment or otherwise)? I’m thinking of starting a local broadband content highlight section.

Btw, TM is not bidding for the WiMax account as far as I know, and well, personally my vote is on either DiGi or Green Packet to get the bid.

Can’t help you out on the local broadband content thing, since I haven’t one that came to mind when the word ‘local’ comes to the equation. I browse the local blogs (although they’re not hosted locally) for news and cross-reference it to confirm validity, but that’s about all I do with local content websites.

For outside malaysia, I have a few, and for that, I’d have to dig up my long list of bookmarks for it, but here’s one that I’ve messed around with a year or two back, and I remember it still and it was quite an interesting way of using broadband for entertainment for an old game.

There’s probably more, but that’s the one I remember most at the moment.

an implementation of something like http://www.deviantart.com exclusively for local malaysian artists (increase the scope to include indie music, which that website did not) would be a nice form of business cum entertainment-focused sort of broadband content as well. I think there’s an indie artists web locally, but I can’t remember the URL for the life of me.
