Redesign Malaysia is an initiative to improve Malaysia's broadband internet penetration, quality and reliability. We aim to achieve this through the compilation of relevant news articles, allowing users to have a voice, enlightening consumers on the options that are available, providing comparative statistics on ISPs, as well as the production of special features and commentary.

It is designed to be a community effort, to utilize information and feedback from broadband users and potential customers across Malaysia. We also aim to gain cooperation from the various broadband players in Malaysia, as well as support from government agencies and regulators.

Currently, we are focused on the Klang Valley, however in time we aim to expand this initiative nationwide. Let's all collaborate - to make fast, cheap and efficient broadband available throughout Malaysia.

According to a very reliable source, we got to know the following about the current P2P blocking issue facing Streamyx users:

- TMNet is currently in the process of testing their “Volume-Base system”
- As its still in the development phase, the call center won’t be able to tell you much.
- The block is implemented from 6AM - Midnight.
- The P2P block was implemented after the Taiwan earthquake because they noticed that “p2p downloading was adding to performance degradation on their network”
- “Weather permitting”, the block will be lifted at the end of January, when the Taiwan circuit is fully restored

Based on the above information, and bandwidth usage starting to show up on bills, we speculate that TMNet will release new packages to cater for heavy broadband users. To be fair, this should result in cheaper packages for light users - and not more expensive packages for heavy broadband users, presumably. As for the throttling, well - let’s hope its really lifted when the Taiwan circuit is restored, and maybe too, it’ll all get settled in the next two days.

Volume-Base system? How reliable is that? I am wondering if the system can record the upload and download size correctly. Is the system easily to tamper with? There had been case in other countries that some personel in the company tamper with the system and make some of the customer bill very high…Just a point though…

Best news I heard all day. Thanks for the update. As for John Lai, query.. from what I know, bandwidth is about upload and download, since you occupy the space in the pipeline (simply put)

So midnight to morning it’s lifted? Strange.. I find the block extends past midnight.. I’ll try again tonight.. anyway it works better that way, since in US, they’re probably at daytime or evening, which is good news for skype users.

Yes the earthquake does have effect to the internet connection , look around the world try finding news , singapore philipines all got problems , even korea , they cant even connect to internet even to their local connection on that current day … they have the worst damage, think about their stock market , what if their stock market rises when they are about to sell then connection down

as for the news i have made some possibility… do you guys notice the 8mb/experimental , i think they will use that as of the 4mb/s said earlier in this blog

It was a slow connection for all P2P and torrent, I can’t even get a 300MB file for 2 weeks 24/7. Today however torrent was totally blocked, can’t connect to any trackers now, this is crossing the line..

bottom line is we pay rm88 every month for a best effort, unlimited 1Mbps line. Best effort in reality is ‘ikut suka TMnet la, either you take it or leave it but still must paid or TM will suspend your account’. Now, with the earthquake as excuse, TM best effort is to effectively block P2P and they excel at doing it (easy ma..). They should increase their capacity as P2P is real world demand. Rather than deny / regulate this market segment, they should capitalise by offering specific package long long time ago. Why supress your customer? TMNet don’t have strategic management department overseeing future or current trend of customer demand ka? Btw, i cannot recall experiencing slow connection browsing the Internet (when all is ok).. so at which instances does P2P usage, by a segment of their customer (20%*) deny or impaired the Internet-use-only customer (80%*) of bandwidth?
* TMnet publicised figure.. right or wrong I don’t know.
