Redesign Malaysia is an initiative to improve Malaysia's broadband internet penetration, quality and reliability.We aim to achieve this through the compilation of relevant news articles, allowing users to have a voice, enlightening consumers on the options that are available, providing comparative statistics on ISPs, as well as the production of special features and commentary.

It is designed to be a community effort, to utilize information and feedback from broadband users and potential customers across Malaysia. We also aim to gain cooperation from the various broadband players in Malaysia, as well as support from government agencies and regulators.

Currently, we are focused on the Klang Valley, however in time we aim to expand this initiative nationwide. Let's all collaborate - to make fast, cheap and efficient broadband available throughout Malaysia.

Update: 16 January 2007 - TheEdgeDaily confirms our speculation that Michael Lai would be joining Green Packet Berhad. He is now the new CEO of its global marketing arm, Green Packet International Sdn Bhd effective Jan 15. And according to Green Packet group managing director and CEO Puan Chan Cheong: “Michael’s extensive hands-on experience in the information technology and telecommunication platforms will certainly add significant value to Green Packet’s efforts in developing and expanding our operations further overseas”. Read more on TheEdgeDaily for a brief writeup on the switch and Michael’s career history.

Sure, we were late on the news of his resignation, but I hope we’ve redeemed ourselves by being one of the first to tell you where he’s going next.According to an industry insider (from a company working closely with Green Packet), after resigning as CEO of TMNet, Michael Lai will join the highly hyped Green Packet Berhad. No word yet on his position, but speculation says he might be the new CEO.

He might make quite a difference, judging by the some favourable comments from industry people. Michael is currently on holiday and not in KL. Word is he left TM Net because of unfair corporate structure - underlings were promoted, and key performance indicators for the National Broadband Plan are no longer in his hands, making his role very small.

It is also said that there will no new CEO replacing Michael Lai (there is a current acting CEO, a Malay lady named Zainab Hashim), as there is no need to - operations of TM Net will be going to the main TM Group. Products and marketing of Streamyx will go to TM Retail, and Technical & Content will go to TM Wholesale (who has been doing a shitty job as of late.) TMNet will be handling content like BlueHyppo & the music portal.

However, the industry insider goes on to say that Streamyx will improve drastically in a year - this new restructuring will bring younger people to the helm (between 30-40), to replace the traditional guys. And…it won’t be called TM Net Streamyx anymore - it will be TM Streamyx.

Green Packet Berhad is pretty well backed, with support from Energy, Water & Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik. To quote Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik: “Green Packet had proven itself to be one of Malaysia’s technology companies with an impressive track record locally and was also creating a significant impact in international telecommunication services. ” Check out this link on The Star - Landmark Green Packet Deal and this link, on Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia. You can also see their corporate fact sheet on GreenPacket.com.

So, will Green Packet be able to “gerak” broadband to the “Rakyat”? They will benefit from Michael’s marketing savvy (as who else knows the weaknesses of the main monopoly ISP better?), but let’s hope their service holds up as well. Congratulations to Michael Lai, and Green Packet.

More updates as times goes by…remember nothing here is guaranteed to be accurate, and is based on speculation and insider info. Let’s hope this new round of restructuring in TM and Green Packet will bring about some much needed change to us, the broadband users.

what i know from insiders in TM, Mr Micheal Lai is requested to resign from TMnet. This is because under his management, tmnet is getting worse if compared to previous CEO. there’s no value added from TMnet. so, we hope for the best from the new CEO.

hi, as one of the member for the Special interest group created by Mr. Michael Lai, i feel sad to hear of his resignation. not only that the last statement that says he is requested to resign due to his poor management makes me feel angry coz i think people doesn’t see what he has done. michael lai is a person who goes all the way to make certain things happen. like the group that he perform, the SIG for all streamyx users through out malaysia. i think that zainab would never do like what micheal did. it;s just not fair…..

hi suhaila, that’s what i heard from insiders, not my opinion. what i heard from TM, the CEO before micheal lai is better than him. that’s why TM management tend to compare both of them. they can’t see any improvement in terms of quality of service in TMnet. one more thing, maybe this is one of TM strategy to get back their fixed line service. more broadband user means more fixed line. because most of us subscribed fixed just for the sake of broadband

If you people said that Michael Lai is making the the TM more worst,
then you totally wrong. I didn’t see any different if Michael Lai have left the TM company. He’s helping us lot of when we having trouble. Other CEO just lazy like hell, the answer they reply is useless and keep thinking us is noods. Streamyx is no hope, I won’t used it again. I'’m now currently using maxis broadband and it’s better than streamyx. Streamyx throttle p2p sharing and always get down. It’s really failure design for Malaysia people. The highest broadband that user can used is 2mb. Most of the country is already up to 10mb, TM company sucks all the money but never ever improve, I wonder what they are doing during working time. Maybe they just “mimum kopi” all the time. Even call customer service, also need to wait such a long time. Goverment should rebuild TM company!!!!!!!!
After studied, I’ll go to oversea. Because goverment never benefit us even we have done a good job, they just care about their “own people”.

Mmm.. definitely this guy who wrote the topic does not know who is Michael Lai. He knows how to talk only .. talk.. talk.. talk. All of his visions are fantasies and not based on truth. I refuse to accept anyone saying TM Wholesale doing a shitty job because personally, I have seen that they are doing the best job possible with limited resources. Please shut your filthy mouths and open your goddamn eyes. Look at the reality. Nuff said

Yes, the person who wrote the article is the shit himself. And for Jacky, if you want 10MB broadband, just go to the country that provides them. Do you know we still using old cables and cannot catter the usage broadband require?
The thing is certain customer still want broadband eventhough they are far from TM Exchange. In this case around 5 km from TM Exchange for better broadband. They said it’s ok, still want it but then, at the end when they got problems, they attack TMNet. Tak buat kerja la, buat apa time keje la. Bullshit! We are doing our best to maintain it but you people are so arrogant and want more usage of p2p to torrent porns, anime n tv series for easy money!! This is sick, addicted to torrent will drive people crazy and out of their mind!

ROTFLOL, what an intelligent discussion.
TM in general is doing a really bad job. While Wahid is way better than any of his predessors, the same can’t be said of the rest of the senior management. Most of them are morons and haven’t brought anything new / solve major existing problems in the company.

November 17 2006 || 6:50 pm

One more comment, response to “staff tmnet”: After all these years, TM has not managed to upgrade their cabling, it’s not because they don’t have the money, the problem is they don’t have capable people looking after projects, these kind of things has resulted in a lot of wasted money. eg tender out projects, and completely leave the outside tender to do things b’cause TM managers don’t have the knowledge to lead, 2 years down the road project not very successful, then blame the tender. Almost every projects like this.

Also broadband is not just for porn & free movies. I know someguy whose company stopped business in M’sia and moved to Thailand because Streamyx sucked. He only has praises for Thailand’s internet. Bad internet is going to cause our country to be left behind while others get ahead.

November 17 2006 || 6:50 pm

[…] And, this is a personal message directed to “staff tmnet“, who commented on my thread on Michael Lai’s career change. My question to you is, do your views represent your organization? […]

I’m a malay guy and even i will admit that TM is doing a shitty job, almost all the civil servants are doing a shitty job that will cause this nation to fall further behind. And yet the civil servants actually have the guts to ask for 40% raise citing they are overworked and underpaid. OMG!!!
Next year i’ll migrate to another country because i’m sick of this corrupted land. Have a Happy New Year everyone.

November 17 2006 || 6:50 pm

Actually, I have no point to argue about broadband here but there’s one thing that TM really failed. Last year, I subscribed to the TM Home Saver package (fixed line) that gives a few bonus to their subscriber and one of the option that I chose was the ID caller (free for life). However, due to their (so-called technical) system problem, instead of free, they’ve charged me.

Do you know how long the took to rectify the problem? It was a hard darned 11 months. I once asked the customer service personnel (which after 2 times of visit but failure at their site), “Do I need to come every month to rectify it at your counter?” “Yes,” she answered. What kind of service manner is like this? I meant is not the 3 buck which is the problem, is the attitude.
I’m totally run out of words to comment. Hope that one day they could realize what’s wrong with them and instead of shielding themselves from the truth, they will really take the iniatiave to improve.
Hope for the better if not best!

No comments on Michael or his precedessors. I only know that Streamyx has yet to improve since 4 years ago! In Oct06, I naively re-signed up after my 1st nasty incident with Streamyx. I have had almost a month of non-existent or slow (ie 15 times) and each time I get to hear the wonderful music looping & looping for at least 3 full min before somebody picks it up. A standard conversation with Customer service is “ask for your info .. wait for 3min.. ask for more info … wait for another 3 min …. will send technician to fix in 48 hours …. protest that reported before- oh, let me check …. wait for 3 min …. give old report no. …. wait 3min …. ” & the same story repeats itself 48 hours later! Till todate, i have yet to hear from Customer service on my status (Kavitha - TM supervisor - i hope you hear this!).

November 17 2006 || 6:50 pm

I’m using streamyx and so far I have no problems and satistfied with my service. Before this I’m using Tmnet dial-up for 8 years and I never had any problems or complaints. For info, I’m and engineering graduate and also a Masters graduate in IT. Maybe those that had problems, the problem is at the end user. They are not IT expert and they keep blaming service providers……Keep up the good work TM…

Josh Lim said..comment

Dear “broadband customer” - should the average user have to be an engineering graduate or have a “Masters graduate in IT” in order to use the Streamyx service? That’s ridiculous.

Remember that in only 30% of problems encountered with Streamyx, the problem is with the end user. What about the other 70% ?

I “was” well satisfy (yeah right..) with super-duper DC-ness which I manage to solve it after 2 years of frustration. After the frequent DC-ness sickness solved, the Screamyx is already hogged with few hundred thousand of 24/7 subscribers which fully utilized the 1Mbps package with P2P (I’m using 512Kbps). Although cheapeast package doesn’t annoy me (just take longer to finish), the decision to cap the P2P speed too, doesn’t affect me much, but when I saw the news of “20% user hogged 80% of total ISP bandwidth…”, I’m totally shocked, and let all the 1Mbps or higher subscriber knowing this the ISP is NOT CAPABLE of delivering what they offer in total, they expect user to ONLY use 10% of the total bandwidth that they paid. Many countries already capable of delivering full bandwidth at least to 70% of the user at their full bandwidth capacity, I don’t see why not m’sia. Not to complain as a minority of the user but 90% of the actual user themselve here are flaming TM right now, and because there’s no other choice but only Streamyx in my area, I had already switch to other services.

November 17 2006 || 6:50 pm

The whole discussion becoming very harsh and yet people are getting personal and emotional, well I like all the comments but still only a few are giving healthy opinion and suggestion, well why our countires does not progress well because too many people with large mouth but small brain, It is not Micheal Lai or Zainab Hashim or other broadband companies or Gerakan that who can shape the Internet Industry to the highest value but us the users, why abroad(not only western) the Internet quality is at the best because they have the smarttest users. You can migrate to other country or cursing everybody in the government but it is you who the nation need to improvise all internet service provider, since from my opinion all ISP in malaysia is still lacking in many areas. Lets develop not provoke… because its going no where.

November 17 2006 || 6:50 pm

I heard enough of this. I had enough of those.

Some people has are so idiotique. Blame this guy, blame that guy then blablablabla… the outcome = anger + nothing being done.

I’d be straight. This comes from my own experience. The long name should explain all I ever was and never will be anymore…

Most Streamyx’s customer (note I that I say not TM customer) calls HelpDesk asking/complain about problems that they had with broadband connection that they are using. I can say that 10% of most calls I had in a day (9 1/2hr shift, 5 days a week) are screaming people. Truth to be told, I even got one screamer (as I called those people) who scream for about 20 minutes because she can’t connect. Took about 1 minute to diagnose and solve the problem, took another 20 minutes fo her to say, “I am sorry, I didn’t you can switch the modem off”. That was no fun at all.

That ain’t much. We are so used to it. Those who aren’t, will go under the desk and cry like 3yr old, pass the call to the “Supervisor” (I dont’ wanna go deeper here, it can cause me lots of trouble. Just note the “quote”). Then, things are as “normal”.

That’s only proves a fact, that Streamyx has problems on the hardware site (and on Tech Support too). Confusing huh?

Of course, that complaining part of your brain tells that these HelpDesk people are idiots (true for most of them, but most idiots sits on top you know..). “You are not helping here,” or “You know, you are such an annoyance,” or “We pay your salary you know, you should listen to us” are what most complainants threw at us. I once was spitted out with “F**K you!” when I was in unstable mood. Of course I reply politely, “Fish you too..”. Got counselled just by that answer. I’m soo glad I did that. Or else I’d never knew I was wrong.

And it wasn’t you who pay our salary. That’s a totally different story.

Kinda not knowing where I am going eh? Keep reading…

I am telling ya, that’s what we, the people IN THE MIDDLE, has to handle so much stress from both customers’ and technicians’ side. It’s crazy how some people (especially complainants) reacts upon JUST AN INTERNET CONNEECTION.

In fact, I grew a heavy depression in my head after 3 months there. Of course later, I got used to it as most people do.

But that was back then, I wasn’t even a Streamyx’s customer.

Can you guess what I’m gonna say next?…

Now, I am “enjoying” broadband as many do. I admit, it sucks BIG TIME. What the heck I can do? Streamyx is still in it’s learning mode. It’s just that both customer and providers FEELING that either of you has/are making problems.

We must admit that Streamyx is like a 4 yr old child. Trying to understand how to put her shirts on her. Trying to tie a shoes (or use velcro). Trying this and that. If only both sides agrees that broadband is still a child in Malaysia.

TM is not an expert YET in broadband tecnology.

Yeah. Sure. “Maxis broadband is better you know…”, how many subscriber do they have compared to Streamyx’s?… “But TM is a big corporation you know,”. True the CORPORATION is big, not the service. You know streamyx is the “best”(cheap, sort-of reliable service) solution you can come up with, do you not? Plus you know, the nodes and backbone thingy, who do you think supplied that?

I hate to tell you this but… none of these sides are looking at the brighter side. That makes most as idiots.

TMnet blames you, you blame TMnet. I wonder how long does this gonna end…

Gosh, please define idiots once more.

Still wondering where am I going?… good.

Now. Let me tell you a story. A short one.

The problems we are facing are NOT just politics, internet, peer-to-peer, TMnet, OLD phone cables, unstable connections, the people on the top, the process of handling problems, the customer service system, the technicians, and lastly, the Rakyat.

So, where is the story I promised?…read on.

There are more things to consider. If you are the Malaysian’s Prime Minister, what do you think you would do? Consider the fact that the one before you has left you with some hectic problems for you to solve IMMEDIATELY.

Do you think you can solve the internet problem in a day or two? In a month or two? Or maybe 10 long years? You don’t know coz you aren’t there.

Petitions like the one this site is good for PM or higher authority to consider looking at. He may decide later on what to do. So can’t we be patient?… It pays hell a lot back to my business just because I am patient alone… why not you?

What? You are gonna die tragically if there’s a slow connection? You are gonna get giant headaches when you can’t download animes? You must be kidding…

I’m a p2p user too. I see MOST of M’sians are downloading Gigabytes of anime, porn, movies, etc. It seems that most of p2p user ARE using most bandwidth.

But it’s not your fault.

Blame your gene coz that gene contains desire to download every possible movies, anime on the tracker so you can waste you valueable time by just watching all of them over and over.

You believe in gene? Do you not?

Yeah, it’s your life and you have the right to do whatever best you think is for you. But can’t you see a reason why oil prices are going up lately? And what does that has to do with slow bandwidth?

Well.. from a Rakyat’s view, it’s crazy. But go a bit on top and see what you can find. It’s for Rakyat all along.

Yep, cronism exists. But still, it’s for the Rakyat. It goes towards the same goal as many others around you, to live peacefully, happily ever after.

Of course, to earn such states, working smart is the only solution.

Smart doesn’t have to mean everybody wins. It means sometimes, one or more people has to sacrifice for other’s well beings.

Don’t you think it’s a little too extreme that we blame so much on the people who taxed us, who help built this country and who have allowed us to live peacefully (sort of)? I think that depends on you…

Yeah, I used to download porn back then. Until I found out that it’s a waste of time since I had I LIVE one sitting here next to me. So stop complaining and go out there and do something else! Do it whenever you are depressed, have no internet connection, have no other things to do except watching movies/anime so that you can stay healthy and live life a little bit longer. You’ll find life much better this way.

Still not getting to where I am going?… actually…

That’s what going to happen when you are sending complaints too much. People get used to it. And when people got used to something, there’s a high probability that….they would do nothing upon it. Don’t you think?

Come on… It’s just an Internet Connection. It’s not your lifeline (well, it maybe is if you decide so, but don’t you have more of other choices you can make?)

Don’t stress too much on this. You’ll go crazy if you continue that. Look at US residents. Some even go so tensed up and kill people just because there’s no net connection (of course, I am just exaggerating to make a point).

Take my words coz I spoke from my own filthy rich “F” words from either customer or ex-boss experience.

Confusing huh? Looks like I’m sending nothing to you. But it’s you who can decide that. Do you not?

Relax, and everything will be fine. It’s just a matter of time that things will be better (or never).

So, whatever happens, just relax…. and enjoy the “show”…
